Please join us at Melbourne University's mini-festival, Encounters with Writing.
The festival showcases the production of original creative work that connects directly and powerfully to the world around them. Creative work that will be displayed / performed publicly (not assessed and forgotten). Engross yourself in the participants' labour of imagining and enacting what they believe universities should be doing at this moment in history.
Students from Melbourne University's PEN Melbourne group are taking over the fourth floor of Arts West. They will be illuminating the fate and work of 10 persecuted writers and journalists from across the globe, but not in a didactic, 'worthy' manner. Instead of informing or 'lecturing', they will be seeking to provoke, unsettle, touch, enlarge and inspire. They are throwing their creativity at this complex task of bursting Australia's bubble of complacency and disengagement and of informing other young people (and not only young) of the real global and local threats to the freedom of expression. The work of PEN will also be highlighted.
